This is a project that I completed during my placement year at Akuma Sports. They specialise in designing and manufacturing sportswear for over 20 different sports. This project was specifically for the sports department at Sussex University. They have been a long-term customer with Akuma but were looking to update their range, introducing a more modern design that featured a new mascot and stingray.
After getting the brief from the client, I looked through all their previous designs to get an idea of what they liked, and I understood their brand guidelines; they wanted a new design but wanted to keep the colours and logos the same. I began working on some different designs but ultimately settled on this one that incorporated the string ray and some abstract waves in the background to represent the water.
After coming up with the concept for the design, I applied it to the playing kit for the core seven sports at the university. I had to make more minor adjustments based on the fit and styling of each garment, but overall, the style stayed consistent. I also made changes based on the specific sport, such as volleyball, which requires a number on the front and back of the jersey, and using a more American-style typeface for lacrosse and basketball.
